Stanford Mobile Health 2012

Sonny Vu, AgaMatrix

Chairman and Founder, AgaMatrix

Sonny leads the new products and mobile health initiatives at AgaMatrix, focusing on product design and business models that can dramatically improve the quality of diabetes care, such as using smartphones to help manage diabetes and leveraging games to inspire behavior change. Prior to AgaMatrix, he worked at Microsoft and then postponed his PhD program at MIT to start his first company, FireSpout, a natural language software company whose technology a large search engine bought. He then, with his old college roommate, Sridhar Iyengar, started AgaMatrix, a company that invents, manufactures, and markets a number of blood glucose monitoring and diabetes management products. Bootstrapping for years and not taking in any VC funding, the two of them are dumbfounded that 8 years later, they now have 10+ products FDA-cleared in this $9B+ reimbursed market, have over 1M people using their glucose meters, shipped the first diabetes app by a meter maker, and have recently landed a great partnership with sanofi-aventis, the world’s 4th largest pharmaceutical company and the largest maker of basal insulin. Most recently, AgaMatrix developed a glucose meter that works with the iPhone, one of the world’s first hardware medical devices to do so.
